In Maine soot is a color. And living on and flipping my 3 very very old farms (1791 and 1864) as a designer one of my favorite solutions is painting particleboard floors (when barn boards are so rotted previous owners took them out, which breaks my heart).
I found a very cheap solution-paint, linoleum and glitter. I know my Atlanta peeps would be floored (no pun intended) that I’m using vinyl/linoleum but there’s thousands of cool patterns on Etsy.
For 20 years, I used to tell my real estate clients when they were putting their house on the market you needed some kind of “bling”. Glitter is the blingiest.
Then I painted the floor, and sprinkled “pixie dust” ($3 glitter shaker) that I use with my nanny kids. Not only does it hide my 120 pound Bernese mountain dog dirty paws, dirt from the dirt road I live on and or soot from my woodstove.
And all for less than $200.
I no longer tile any floors in Maine. My contractors hate putting it in. The floor is never plum, and it’s super cold on your feet.
